Summit Wealth Strategies is a Colorado-based advisory and wealth management firm that works with business owners at the point of sale. Its value is specific and measurable: by structuring the transaction efficiently, Summit helps sellers reduce their tax exposure and keep significantly more of the proceeds from their exit.
That value only exists inside a narrow window. Summit did not need business owners who might sell one day. It needed owners who were already in the process of selling, or very close to it, along with buyers holding acquisition targets that could benefit from the same work. This was a category within a category, and a difficult one to pinpoint. Owners at that stage rarely announce it, and by the time a sale is public, the planning window has usually closed.
We designed an origination campaign limited to two markets, Colorado and Minnesota, and built it around a single question: is this owner already on the path to exit? Concentrating on two states allowed us to work each market in depth rather than spreading effort thin across the country.
Because ready-now sellers are scarce at any given moment, the system was built for longevity from the start. The goal was not only to surface owners who were ready today, but to identify and segment those who would be ready in two or three months, so they could be nurtured consistently and converted into clients when the timing was right.
We ran several parallel tests to find where pre-exit sellers could be reached most reliably. These included events-based campaigns, direct outreach to business owners, and outreach to the professionals who sit closest to a transaction: accountants, lawyers, and acquisition firms with companies in their pipeline. Over time, these relationships became a source of introductions that Summit could benefit from directly.
The pipeline took time to build, as expected given how narrow the target was. Every response was segmented by exit timing. Owners ready now were introduced immediately, while those planning to move in the coming months were kept in a structured nurture track until they were ready to engage.
The engagement showed that even a narrow, hard-to-reach target can be originated systematically. By working two markets in depth, testing multiple channels, and segmenting sellers by timing rather than discarding those not yet ready, Summit built a pipeline that continues to produce value well beyond its first closed engagement.
